Lesson 17: Interviewing for your dream job!

The interview process is a critical step in the job application process, as it provides both the employer and the candidate with an opportunity to assess each other and determine if there is a good fit. It’s important for candidates to prepare thoroughly for the interview, researching the company and the role, anticipating questions that may be asked, and practicing their responses. This will help them feel more confident and prepared on the day of the interview.

During the interview, candidates should aim to make a good first impression by dressing appropriately, being on time, and demonstrating good communication skills. They should listen carefully to the questions asked and respond thoughtfully, providing specific examples from their experiences to illustrate their qualifications and skills. It’s also important for candidates to ask thoughtful questions of their own, showing their interest in the role and the company. By preparing well and presenting themselves professionally during the interview, candidates can increase their chances of landing the job they desire.

While most (if not all) of these elements are still very valid, it should be tsated that technology nd digital tools have also impacted this process. Nowadays, video interviews are much more common, regardless of distance. While this type of interview eliminates some previously crucial elements, it also limits the opportunity of the candidate of impressing. However, creating a lasting,, positive, impression is still very important and relevant.

The Video Interview:

A video interview is a job interview conducted remotely using video conferencing software or a video recording platform. Instead of meeting face-to-face with an interviewer in person, the candidate and the interviewer communicate via video using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Video interviews can be live or pre-recorded, and they are often used as a screening tool for job candidates before inviting them for an in-person interview. Video interviews allow employers to evaluate a candidate’s communication skills, professionalism, and other job-related competencies remotely, saving time and money for both the candidate and the employer.

Preparing for a video interview requires a few considerations to ensure a smooth and successful experience. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Test your technology: Before the interview, test your computer, webcam, microphone, and internet connection to make sure everything is working properly.

Choose a quiet, well-lit location: Select a quiet and well-lit location for your interview. Avoid any distractions or background noise that may interfere with the interview.

Dress appropriately: Dress professionally as if you were attending an in-person interview. Avoid wearing bright colors or busy patterns that may be distracting on camera.

Practice: Practice answering common interview questions in front of a mirror or with a friend to feel more comfortable and confident during the actual interview.

Have a backup plan: In case of technical difficulties, have a backup plan ready such as a phone number or alternative video conferencing platform.

During the video interview, it’s important to maintain good communication and presentation skills:

Make eye contact: Look directly into the camera, not at your own image on the screen, to simulate eye contact with the interviewer.

Speak clearly and concisely: Speak clearly and at a moderate pace. Avoid rambling or giving overly long responses.

Listen carefully: Listen carefully to the interviewer’s questions and take time to understand them before responding.

Be engaging: Show enthusiasm and interest in the position and company. Use body language to convey your interest and engagement.

Follow up: After the interview, follow up with a thank you email to express your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterate your interest in the position.

Pro Tips: Do´s and Don´ts during video interviews:
