Lesson 12: Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a document that provides a detailed overview of an individual’s education, work experience, skills, achievements, and other relevant information. It is commonly used in academic and research fields, as well as in job applications outside of the United States.

A CV typically includes information such as the individual’s full name and contact information, educational background, work experience (including job titles, responsibilities, and dates of employment), professional achievements and awards, relevant skills and certifications, and any relevant publications, presentations, or other scholarly works. A CV is usually longer and more detailed than a resume, and is often tailored to the specific job or field the individual is applying for.

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) typically includes the following sections:

  • Personal information: This includes your full name, address, phone number, and email address.
  • Professional or career objective: This section explains the type of job you’re seeking and what you hope to achieve in your career.
  • Education: This section lists your academic qualifications, including degrees, diplomas, certificates, and any other relevant courses or training.
    • Remember that when we talk about experience, not all of our experience needs to be from work. If you have gone to specific courses, or internships, or even if you have had a job working with your family, this information would be relevant here as well.
  • Work experience: This section provides details of your employment history, including your job titles, the names of your previous employers, your job responsibilities, and your achievements.
  • Skills: This section highlights your key skills and abilities, such as computer skills, language skills, or other technical or professional competencies.
  • Achievements: This section highlights any notable achievements, such as awards, scholarships, publications, or significant contributions to previous employers or projects.
  • Hobbies and interests: This section briefly describes your hobbies and interests, particularly if they are relevant to the job you’re applying for.
  • References: This section typically includes the names and contact details of two or three professional references who can speak to your qualifications and work experience.

It’s important to note that the exact format and content of a CV may vary depending on the specific job and industry you’re applying for, as well as the country or region where the job is located.

Should I include a picture on my CV?
It depends on the country and industry norms. In some countries and industries, it is common to include a photo on a CV, while in others, it is not. For example, in the United States, it is not typical to include a photo on a CV, while in some European countries, it is more common. It’s a good idea to research the cultural and professional norms of the country and industry you are applying to, and follow their guidelines. Additionally, some employers may have specific preferences or requirements for CVs, so it’s important to carefully read the job posting and follow any instructions provided.
